SOUTH STRAdBROKE ISLAND
South Stradbroke Island (Indigenous: Minjerriba) locally referred to as “South Straddie”
The island is home to hundreds of wild wallabies that are usually human orientated. They are also well known for stealing food and joining campers around their sites.
One of more than 360 islands within Moreton Bay, the southern end of South Stradbroke Island fronts the Broadwater and the tip marks the Gold Coast Seaway and only a short distance from the mainland at Southport Spit.
South Stradbroke Island consists mainly of sand dunes, remnant livstona rainforest and melaleuca wetlands.
The island also has unique flora and fauna.
The golden wallaby is native to the island and the agile wallaby, once common to the region, has now retreated to the island. There is a number of camping grounds and holiday homes of families from generations past down.
South Stradbroke Island is also home to the eco resort Couran Cove which offers various styles of accommodation, a wide range of activities and berthing services to visiting boaties.
Couran Cove was built by former Olympian and Gold Coast City Mayor Ron Clarke.
The resort incorporates a number of environmental design features and technologies.
WAVE BREAK ISLAND
Wave Break Island was created in 1985 as part of the Gold Coast Seaway construction. It was constructed to protect the western foreshore of the Broadwater from waves. Wave Break island has become a popular location for day visitors. A perfect location to relax and admire the stunning sunsets over the Gold Coast Hinterland.
Wave Break Island is popular for snorkelling on the Gold Coast and is home to many different fish species.
Sanctuary Cove is a gated community in the suburb of Hope Island.
It covers an area of 474 hectares south of the Coomera River close to its mouth. To the east of Sanctuary Cove is Coomera Island. Sanctuary Cove provides a completely self-contained residential environment with its own shopping centre and entertainment facilities. Sanctuary Cove offers many of the facilities of a holiday resort, such as boating marinas and golf courses. It is home to the famous Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
